How to Evaluate an Instagram Automation Tool Before You Connect Your Account

A short checklist for the thing that matters most and gets asked about least: what happens to your account and your customers’ data once you connect it.

Most comparisons focus on the wrong thing first

Feature lists and pricing tiers are the easy part to compare, and most buying guides stop there. The questions that actually matter for an Instagram automation tool are about permissions, data, and what happens when it goes wrong — and they’re worth asking before you connect an account you can’t easily disconnect from cleanly.

What permissions is it actually requesting?

Instagram DM automation only needs a specific, narrow set of permission scopes to read and reply to messages. If a tool is asking for broader access than that — posting on your behalf, managing ads, reading followers — ask why. More access than the job requires is a real question, not a formality.

Does it have a real deauthorize and data-deletion path?

Meta requires any app handling this to support disconnecting cleanly and deleting the data it collected on request. Ask the vendor directly, or check whether it’s documented anywhere, rather than assuming it exists.

Does it disclose that customers are talking to a bot?

Both Meta’s platform policy and, depending where your customers are, emerging AI-disclosure regulation expect an automated assistant to identify itself as one, at least on the first message of a conversation. A tool that’s silent about this is a red flag, not a neutral default.

Can it actually check real availability, or is it just replying with plausible text?

This is the difference between a tool that queries your real schedule before answering and one that generates a friendly-sounding response with no data behind it. Ask specifically how it knows what’s free — a vague answer here is worth taking seriously.

A short checklist to bring to any demo

Five direct questions worth getting a real answer to before you connect an account:

  • What exact permissions does it request, and can you see the list before connecting?
  • Does it have a working deauthorize / data-deletion callback, not just a promise of one?
  • Does the bot identify itself as automated to customers?
  • Does it check real, current availability, or generate plausible-sounding replies?
  • What happens when a customer asks for a human — is there an actual handover, or a dead end?
